No, people are too busy bickering about #gamergate for something useful to be noticed.

Holy shit... if they can scale down as well as up, well, that's the future right there.

WOAH WHAT? That's insane. Fusion cars when?

Where do you put the waste?

As I understand it, fusion reactors require total containment so there is no "coolant" water/etc that becomes radioactive waste in the end.

I'll believe it when it's something more than CAD drawings and equations.

Also, despite what the article says, there's no way practical way to miniaturize this to power aircraft/cars.

Interesting I had no idea that was the case

you "could put it on a semi-trailer, similar to a small gas turbine, put it on a pad, hook it up and can be running in a few weeks."

Yes please

It's a Jesus Diaz story, so I assume whatever contained within is false/exaggerated/plain stupid.

Woah, when did Aston Martin start making sedans?

Since he got it from Aviation Week , I'm inclined to give it more credence.

Oh I saw the links, but the Jesus Diaz byline gave me that immediate impression.

I love how people jump to conclusions

Power cars, airplanes, etc...power what exactly? It's not a propulsive device. Unless it's pumping out an insane amount of energy it's probably not capable of producing energy as quickly as an airplane would consume it without having a ton of these reactors on board.

Fusion energy is the future if anyone can figure it out, but let's get the reactor running before jumping to applications

Exactly! If all we can do is power ships trains and eliminate coal/gas-fired power plants, that is still an enormous win for humanity. We can stick with ICE or batteries for cars, thanks.

"It is the size of a jet engine, power airplanes, spaceships, and cities—and they say it will be operative in only 10 years."

So which is it. the size of a jet engine, power airplanes (?) spaceships or cities? Oh Diaz....

Kinja'd!!! Jayhawk Jake > Brian, The Life of
10/15/2014 at 13:10

Kinja'd!!!0

I'm not saying it won't ever be used in cars or planes, I'm just saying to temper expectations of immediate applications

Replacing coal should be this reactors (hopeful) #1 priority. despite the bad rap cars get, they are a very small part of the problem in relation to electricity generation.

That's another one of those articles that needs special dispensation to give more stars. It also nicely puts into perspective how stupid most of Gawker media's articles are. Seriously massive implications, and I hope like hell it works.

He probably sees the oceans of hate crashing against him as jealousy. I mean why wouldn't he? He just makes GIFs and salacious claims as a job.

For me it goes past that though. I stopped reading Gizmodo almost completely due to his bullshit waste-of-space writing. He even created a kinja account to insult me one time. Out of everyone out there that could do his job (middleschoolers, meth addicts, etc.), I have no idea why Gawker media sees him as someone worth employing , I've always assumed he just has some amazing blackmail on someone in its upper management.

I will admit that he occasionally finds cool shit like the topic in question but you are absolutely right that he is a shit journalist. He's pretty much on par with Buzzfeed/Upworthy/Huff Po for shittiness and should experience a canoe fire.
